Post-Season Fever

Here in St. Louis, we're cheering on our Cardinals, but many of us are also cheering for another team, the Kansas City Royals.

Why such divided loyalty from a fan base that calls itself "Cardinals Nation?" Because many of us remember what it was like 29 years ago, the last time these two teams met in World Series competition.

As a native of the east side of the state, who was uprooted from a brief stint in Oklahoma only to be plopped down on the west side of the state in the spring of 1985, I had no idea that history was about to be made.

Our St. Louis Cardinals had won their last World Series Championship just three years previous - 1982 - the year I graduated high school. Those were the years of Whiteyball, Ozzie Smith and an amazing club that kept things about as exciting as they can get. We enjoyed the run up to the playoffs, and were thrilled when it came down to the two Missouri teams in the final seven games of the season. Of course, as Cardinals fans, we wanted a different outcome in game 7, but it was not to be.

In the years since then, the Cardinals have picked up two more World Championships, and made it to the playoffs several times. The poor Royals, however, never even got close. Until this year.

As I write this, the Royals need two more wins, and the Cardinals need three to set up a rematch that's been in the works for almost three decades. Ironically, about 75% of the current players were not even alive when these two clubs last met in World Series play. Lucky for them, those of us who were around have not forgotten the excitement or the heartbreak.

We will continue to cheer on the The Cardinals and The Royals
until the two meet, which we really hope they will. If it happens, our allegiance will be all Redbirds. Here's to a different outcome between our two Missouri teams!
